On Feb. 3, 1942, n two year old Belgian colt was brought to the Stange Memorial Clinic for treatment. Examination of the colt revealed a large osseous growth on the left medial, mental surface of the mandible.
A local veterinarian sent in this interesting case history of a free-martin Holstein heifer. At two years of age, this heifer appeared to have a normal sexual cycle. She had been bred six or eight times and still came in heat regularly. This heifer showed no masculinity or coarseness as do many free-martins.
The poultry industry is a big business. In the last year, poultry producers enjoyed a 1,500,000,000 dollar income. The size of this figure is emphasized when it is realized that this income exceeded that of cattle raisers by 200 million dollars, topped the value of the national corn crop by 300 million dollars, and in five of the last six years was only second in value to dairy products.
"There is an old saying that whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing well. In no connection is this more true than in surgery. The necessity for a surgical operation can usually be realized by the owner of the animal, especially if it is some external condition.
