Farm Policies and Our Rural Communities

Last month the author discussed the basic factors affecting rapid change in our rural areas. He noted that past attempts to indirectly increase income flows in rural communities through government farm program have not reversed the economic decline of many small communities. This article analyzes alternative farm programs facing Congress in 1970 and compares the short and long-term effects of each on communities.

Rampage - New Soybean Variety from Iowa

Rampage, a new high yielding soybean variety with maturity similar to Hark, has promise for reducing cost of production and increasing net return per acre. However, it has performed better in tests outside Iowa than within the state. The authos compare Rampage's characteristics and performance with Hark's and discuss its potential in Iowa.

Wirth - New Soybean Variety for Northern Iowa

Wirth, a new soybean variety released by the Iowa State University- U.S. Department of Agriculture soybean breeding program, has outyielded current varieties of similar maturity in northern tests. This article discusses its development, performance, adaptation and distribution.

Comparison of Two Exercise Plans for Women

Propert exercise improves the functioning of the heart and lungs, tones muscles and aids in weight control. The author suggest guidelines for selecting a good exercise program and discusses the results of a study conducted in the ISU department of physical education for women which compared the effectiveness of two popular exercise plans.
