From "H. Ec." to Geisha Girls and Russian Refugees: Sarah Field's Experiences in Japanese Schools and Russian War Work
( 2017-03-17) Beyer, Jeanette ; Iowa State University Digital Repository

But not all Miss Field's time was spent in language school. There were many walk-s through those narrow, tortuous streets, and visits to those "funny, brown open-fronted shops", where the mysteries and splendor of the Orient was laid before her—brilliant silk kimonas with strange Japanese characters and symbols which told stranger stories in their embroideries; and lacquer, old teak/Wood, and jade in many unusual forms. Then there were missionary meetings and the church, where she met the wonderful people with whom she was soon· to work.

The Giving of the Gift
( 2017-03-17) Dodge, Alice ; Iowa State University Digital Repository

How many times have you looked over the stock in a gift shop and been astonished that some very simple articles were priced at as much as two or three times their actual value? That is, if you were to buy these very same articles in a dry goods store, a hardware store, or, perhaps, the "five and ten," you would pay considerably less. You perhaps wondered how anyone had the ability to sell any produce at a price so much beyond its cash value. But your merchant certainly does sell these articles, and there seems to be a steady demand for more from the buying public.
