You hear a lot about current trends in farm income. And you hear a lot about national farm policy. But there are some things you can do yourself to boost your income.
Last year some Iowa farm families spent more than they made. If they dipped into savings, it may not be serious. Such savings may have been "ear-marked" for the purpose. But if it was the result of accumulated debts, it may be a warning signal.
The economic history of Iowa farming is written in the ups and downs of Iowa farm income. When national income soared during the war to two and one-half times its prewar mark, good times came to Iowa farms.
Tests at Iowa State College indicate that corn silage can replace more hay in the dairy cow ration than is commonly believed. This doesn't mean that college dairy husbandrymen are recommending that dairyman leave all hay from the cattle ration, but corn silage can replace hay to the extent that it's practical and economical.
