Dr. Monica Howard is the 1998 recipient of the Carl J. Norden Distinguished Teacher Award. The Carl J. Norden Distinguished Teacher Award is given to outstanding teachers who through their ability, dedication, character, and leadership contribute significantly to the advancement of the veterinary medical profession. Dr. Howard is an Assistant Professor in the Department ofVeterinary Pathology. In addition to teaching, she serves on the Academic Standards Committee and is the chair of the Academic Advising Committee.

Dirofilaria immitis is the etiologic agent for canine heartworm disease. Although it is most notably associated with disease in dogs, various other species can serve as the definitive hosts. When left unchecked, infection can be fatal. Heartworm disease in cats is an interesting and sometimes frustrating condition to deal with as it is difficult to diagnose. The true prevalence of this disease in felines is unknown. It is believed to be less than that in dogs in the same endemic areas. This paper is intended to review heartworm disease as it relates to cats with respect to prevalence, clinical signs, diagnosis, and treatment.

The William O. Reece Academic Advising Award is given each year to an individual in the Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine who exhibits excellence in the area of academic advising. The Faculty and Alumni Awards Committee of the College of Veterinary Medicine selects the winner from student chosen nominees. This years recipient is Dr. Kristina G. Miles from the Department of Radiology, Veteirnary Clinical Sciences.

Graduation at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine is a happy time. New veterinarians celebrate the conclusion of four long years of late nights and hard work. However, graduation also means that student loan payments are just around the corner.

Welcome to Volume 60, Issue Number 2 of the ISU Veterinarian. This issue marks the start of our tenure as editors of the longest, continuously running, student-produced veterinary publication in the United States. Former editor, Elizabeth Carney, and Layout Editor, Mark Troxel, left us with large shoes to fill. Their countless hours spent producing the last three issues and creating our web page lifted the journal . into the 21st century. We have tried to continue their high standards of excellence. We hope that you find this issue as educational, informative, and entertaining as the past 119 issues have been.
