In Memory of Sally Fry

As the Fall 1994 semester began, I caught a glimpse of a new student looking at the library's bookdrop with an expression of amusement and wonder. I'd forgotten that a new set of people don't know how an ugly, out-of-date piece of equipment came to be painted to resemble an elephant. I also knew that this was a place to begin to remember Sally Fry.

Selenium Responsive Dermatosis in Cattle

A yearling Maine-Anjou heifer was admitted to the Iowa State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital for diagnosis and treatment of a clinical problem characterized by weight loss, extensive hair loss and multiple 2-5 cm skin lesions around the face, poll, ears, neck, back and rump regions. Less extensive lesions of similar appearance were also found on the legs and underline. Grossly, many of the lesions were ringworm-like in appearance with prominent, whitish, asbestos-like accumulations of scaley material on the surface.

Dr. Eric Davis, DVM was the 1994 recipient of the SCAVMA Teaching Award for Clinical Sciences. Dr. Davis is currently an assistant professor in the Large Animal Clinical Sciences department at the University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville, TN, where he is active in equine field services and equine surgery.
