Hiring custom work and machinery has become an important means of cutting machinery investment and cost on Iowa farms. It has become particularly advantageous on farms without a large acreage over which to spread fixed costs.
Cattle prices should be more stable this year than a year ago. Also the spread between the upper and lower grades during the spring months should be wider. Cattle kill during the first half of the year is expected to be less than a year earlier. An unusually high share of last year's kill came in the first half of the year. Cattle prices may not show as much strength in late 1954, however.
The hog ration that will give the greatest average daily gains may or may not be the same one that will give you the lowest cost of gains. It depends on the relative prices of the feeds that go into the ration. Research workers in animal nutrition and farm management at Iowa State are developing some guideposts for choosing the most profitable ration.
