Brief Summary of Library Accessibility Survey Results

2021 , Vega García, Susan , University Library , University Library

In late Fall 2021 the library conducted a survey of students with disabilities to learn about their library use and needs. Survey results indicate the primary challenge faced by students with disabilities who responded to the survey is finding an appropriate place to study in the library. While all students likely experience this problem to some extent, students with disabilities who require specific accommodations are at a distinct disadvantage. The library is currently not accommodating these needs well.

Library Online Meeting Best Practices Recommendations

2021 , Vega García, Susan , University Library , University Library

Introduction: In listening sessions held in late 2020, library staff expressed having issues with online meetings. Library Management Team (LMT) tasked Greg Davis, Susan Vega Garcia, and Harriet Wintermute “to explore effective meeting practices for virtual environments and make recommendations for best practices to use library-wide.”1 During January-February 2021, the group reviewed examples and articles about virtual meeting practices from libraries and other organizations. The group also sent a survey to all Library staff to gather input about their library online meeting experiences and reviewed the results to aid in formulating these recommendations for the library.

Inclusive Policies Review: A Method and Model for Debiasing Policies

2022-03-02 , Vega García, Susan , Sullivan, Laura , University Library , University Library

Policies in organizations are often regarded as authoritative and objective statements that set regulations, rules, and expectations on specific processes and situations, and define what is permissible. However, policies can also be subject to hidden oppressive biases. In Fall 2020, the University Library's DEI Committee initiated their Inclusive Policies Review project. The purpose of this project is to review library policies for biases and inequity, and then recommend changes with the goal of having policies that are more inclusive, antiracist and bias-free, as well as to create more inclusive environments for the library and its patrons. Important parts of the project development included the involvement of stakeholders and creation of procedures and a rubric to guide our policy reviews. Presenters will discuss development and implementation of the project and include points of view from policy reviewers and stakeholders. Attendees will learn how this project was developed, progress to date, and a method for implementing similar projects for their own departments or units.

Best Practices for Inclusive Library Searches

2021 , Vega García, Susan , University Library , University Library

Background: Inclusive searches take into account diversity, equity and inclusion values and implement DEI actions at all stages of the search. In the library environment, we need to address common practices and beliefs1 that may conflict with DEI values and negatively impact search outcomes, and replace these instead with more inclusive practices. Items below are listed in relative order of the search process itself. This Best Practices document should be used in consultation with the “Library Recruitment Process” checklist (linked on the Intranet).

FY21 Annual Report on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

2021-07-06 , Vega García, Susan , University Library , University Library

Fiscal Year 2021 was a challenging year due to the COVID‐19 pandemic and nationwide unrest. The University Library continued to operate with most staff working remotely for much of the year due to campus closure, with a small core of essential staff working onsite to maintain services such as library material access for the ISU community and our Interlibrary Loan patrons. During this unstable time, the University Library continued to provide DEI professional development learning opportunities to library staff, ISU community, and our national and global partners through our programming, services, and guides. Below is a summary of initiatives, achievements, and outcomes by Library staff in FY21.
