Improving Subject Headings for Iowa Indigenous Peoples

By authorizing outdated terms for North American Indigenous peoples, the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) vocabulary deprioritizes or ignores the preferred names of the peoples being described. As a result, cataloging and metadata professionals constrained by LCSH often must apply names imposed during colonization. For example, in many library catalogs, works about people of the Meskwaki Nation in Iowa are labeled with “Fox Indians--Iowa” and “Sauk Indians--Iowa,” and Ioway peoples are described as “Iowa Indians.” As part of a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiative at Iowa State University Library, a working group in the Metadata Services department undertook a project to build, publish, and use a controlled vocabulary of preferred terms for Indigenous communities with ties to land that is now part of the state of Iowa. This paper describes the working group’s research, outreach efforts, published vocabulary, and process for adding the preferred subject headings to library metadata.

Unsub in Real Life: Using Unsub as Part of Serials Decisions and Negotiations

This presentation introduced attendees to the benefits and limitations of Unsub, a data analysis tool designed by OurResearch. In this presentation, OurResearch co-founder, Heather Piwowar, demonstrated the use of Unsub for analyzing usage and cost data on a library’s “Big Deal.” The other two presenters, Jessica Harris of the University of Chicago, and Eric Schares of Iowa State University, discussed how they used the tool at their libraries to make collection development decisions for their libraries’ journal subscriptions.

Assessing the Impact of a Collaborative OER & Affordable Resources Committee: Instructors’ Awareness of Course Material Options

This case study shares observations from a 2022 survey of 197 instructors at Iowa State University, a public research university in the United States. The survey sought to explore instructor awareness of three major affordable course material initiatives supported by the university’s Open & Affordable Education Committee (OAEC): Open Educational Resources (OER), Course Reserves, and Immediate Access. Results from the survey found that despite significant cross-promotion and collaboration between the three programs represented on the OAEC, the awareness and uptake of each program varied greatly, as did instructors’ understanding of the differences between each material type. This paper shares the results of that survey, as well as improvements which have been made to the OAEC’s programming and promotion efforts in the year since.

The goals of this article are: to demystify innovation in academic libraries by providing a foundation for those wanting to learn more about it; encourage librarians to explore different types of innovation; introduce practical ideas for implementing library workplace innovation (as well as supporting innovation on campus); and provide provocative ideas to help spark creativity locally.

Open Access Workflows for Academic Libraries

There is a growing acceptance of open access funding models among academic publishers, and a growing adoption of open access publishing agreements among academic libraries. In this context, libraries are taking on new roles and new processes to ensure the successful implementation of open access funding initiatives. This article will examine some of the key issues and considerations in the area of open access workflows, and discuss how one research-intensive library in the United States has approached these new functions.

Reconsidering Silos

While organisational silos are often viewed as an obstacle to overcome, this paper argues that they are a necessary feature of the workplace environment and should instead be approached in a manner that maximises their potential. This case study describes an approach used by three specialised areas at an academic library—cataloguing and metadata services, digital collections and digital preservation—to retrospectively manage the technical debt incurred during the COVID-19 pandemic.
