Using an Interdisciplinary Approach to Teach Undergraduates Communication and Information Literacy Skills

2010 , Dinkelman, Andrea L. , Aune, Jeanine E. , Nonnecke, Gail R. , University Library , English , Horticulture

For successful and productive careers, undergraduate students need effective communication and critical thinking skills; information literacy is a substantial component in the development of these skills. Students often perceive communication courses as distinct and separate from their chosen discipline. Faculty from the Departments of English and Horticulture and the library at Iowa State University collaborated in a foundation communication course (English 250). The course incorporates five components—finding information sources; evaluating information sources; and preparing an annotated bibliography, a research paper, and a research poster—all within the context of horticulture. The objective of the collaboration was to integrate communication and information literacy concepts into English 250 and relate these concepts to the students’ discipline of horticulture. Assessment data and focus group discussions strongly validate students’ appreciation for an interdisciplinary approach to teaching communication and information literacy skills within the discipline.

Planning, Producing, and Implementing a Multilingual Audiotape Walking Tour of the Iowa State University Parks Library

1994-11-01 , Huls, Mary Ellen , Parsons, Kathy , Parsons, Kathy , Peterson, Lorna , Vakili, Mary Jane , University Library

Providing physical orientation to a library remains a standard function of a bibliographic instruction program. Librarians, faced with diminished resources and increased user demands with diverse needs, have responded in creative ways to provide orientation. One such way is the self-guided audiocassette taped library tour. To assist librarians in developing, planning, and implementing self-guided audiocassette walking tours in a variety of languages, a packet of information representing the development of the multilingual audiocassette taped tour is presented. Included here are: the grant proposal, a Parks Library tour script in English, progress and final reports, tour packet provided to library patrons, and guidelines for planning.

Darwin’s Citation Impact

2009-02-12 , Pellack, Lorraine , Pellack, Lorraine , Reference and Instruction , University Library

This presentation covered basic definitions of impact factors, citation impact and h index. Then, looked at Charles Darwin’s publication record, the process involved in determining his citation impact, and compared Darwin’s citation impact to that of modern day researchers in ecology and evolutionary biology. Science is continually focusing on current research, new techniques, latest discoveries. Once in a while it’s good to reflect back and re-examine the past.
