The Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering teaches the design, analysis, and improvement of the systems and processes in manufacturing, consulting, and service industries by application of the principles of engineering. The Department of General Engineering was formed in 1929. In 1956 its name changed to Department of Industrial Engineering. In 1989 its name changed to the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering.
About
Dr. Gary Allen Mirka is a University Professor and the John Ryder Professor in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Iowa State University. Dr. Mirka has served as ISU College of Engineering Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the department chair of the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering. Dr. Mirka received his Ph.D. in industrial and systems engineering 1992 from The Ohio State University. He is a fellow of The Ergonomics Society and recipient of 1993 Volvo Award in Low Back Pain Research. Dr. Mirka’s basic research interests are in spine biomechanics and electromyography while his applied research interests are focused on ergonomics intervention effectiveness research. Dr. Mirka’s basic research interests are in two broad areas: stochastic modeling of biomechanical systems and the interplay between active and passive tissues in the lumbar spine. Dr. Mirka’s applied research interests focus on the development and assessment of ergonomics interventions for the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders. The US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been the primary sponsor of this work, and this portfolio of work has included projects in construction, manufacturing, agriculture, and commercial fishing.
