Abstract
An ever-increasing supply of live sports content is being made available to consumers. With this increasing supply comes a demand for personnel who are knowledgeable in live sports production. Across the United States, journalism schools should not only make students aware of this demand, but also prepare them for it. Using the Lewinian Model of Experiential Learning Theory (ELT), this project proposes a course to introduce students to the basic concepts and practices of sports broadcast production. The course, titled “An Introduction to Sports Broadcast Production,” utilizes all phases of the Lewinian Model to deliver a hybrid course consisting of online lectures and in-person labs. Its design for the purposes of this project is geared toward Iowa State University students, but the concepts and practices taught could be applicable elsewhere. This document details the course structure and content, my process of developing it, and potential areas for improvement. While modifications could be made in terms of inclusiveness and lab structure, this course provides students with concrete experiences they can reflect upon, learn from, and apply in future learning and work experiences.
