dc.description.abstract
I used my Honors Project to research and discover ideas and solutions that will assist in the planning and coordination of weddings for “extraordinary” Brides and Grooms; a branch of the wedding industry that is currently severely lacking. The three main areas of extraordinary weddings that I worked on were in the areas of Brides and Grooms that were diagnosed with cancer, required the use of a wheelchair, and who had a prosthetic limb. While there are plenty of other extraordinary circumstances out there I chose these three as a good place to start and as examples that had broad implications. When people picture a wedding they see a Bride walking down the aisle and a ceremony and reception full of the latest trends, colors, and styles. With 1 in 5 Americans living with a disability, more information, examples, and bespoke planning needs promoted in order to break stereotypes and create opportunities. My project takes a closer look at details that most people take for granted like layout, attire, schedule, and menu so that those with extraordinary circumstances do not feel hindered and can instead focus on enjoying their special day.
