Abstract

Aquaponics is a method of sustainable agriculture that uses the symbiotic relationships between fish, beneficial bacteria, and plants to grow food. Iowa State University has conducted research and extension programs on aquaponics for several years, evaluating production methods, plant and fish species, lighting technology, food safety, economic feasibility, and sustainability. Although this research has advanced the aquaponics industry as a whole, the cost of the systems and the newness of the technology presents challenges for adoption by the general public. Therefore, a smallscale system was devised that could meet the needs of the public and be used to increase awareness of the aquaculture industry.
