dc.description.abstract Current research being conducted at Iowa State University assesses active window technology related to energy efficiency through the development and testing of an active, "Smart Window" to be used primarily in light commercial buildings. Individual self contained window units are independently operated based upon program parameters which are determined from a selected menu of parameters for specific installations. The energy sensitive, automatically self-controlled window units are powered by elecoiciry generated by photo voltaic surfaces on the window frames. The testing phase of the research will be completed during the Summer of 1994 in Reno. Nevada, utilizing Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory's "Mobile Window Thermal Test Facility." The double celled test facility will be used to compare the performance of a conventional window to that of a Smart Window.
