Abstract
Battery-less Internet of Things (IoT) nodes harvest energy from their surrounding environments. Due to limited energy capacity, each node turns on and off intermittently. Communication between nodes becomes a challenge when nodes are not guaranteed to be on simultaneously. This work provides an overview of a system stack for intermittent communication, focusing on an intermittent communication protocol (ICP). In earlier work, the life cycle management protocol (LMP) is introduced for controlling the frequency and length of each on time of a node. Our ICP dynamically configures the LMP with on times specific to the node's current state. This work also provides an open-source simulation of the system stack with an initial evaluation of the protocol’s performance.
