dc.description.abstract Investigation into the work experience of a female long-haul truck driver reveals motivations and adaptive strategies utilized in a masculine-identified occupation. Participant observation gives insights into the agendas, strategies, and interpretations of work by a professional long-haul trucker. Economic need and opportunity, the mystique of the truck driver, and occupational thrills attract both women and men to the job. Many women also drive 18-wheelers to preserve a relationship with a male companion. Despite many dangers and inconveniences, many women find satisfaction in this nontraditional occupation.
