dc.description.abstract <p>Most products can fail in different ways. Automobile failures, for example, may be due to malfunctions in the engine, transmission system or brake system. Within the transmission system alone, you might have bearing, seal, gear and other failures. Different kinds of failures are often referred to as competing failure modes.</p>
