Abstract

As a land-grant university, Iowa State prides itself in promoting outreach that moves beyond the campus borders. Parenting: It’s A Life (PIAL), is an outreach program that provides life skills curriculum to teachers and their 7-12th grade students. PIAL was created years ago in response to prevalent teen pregnancy issues. Currently, PIAL provides education and resources to youth on several life skills.

Previous research indicated students increased their life skills knowledge after PIAL presentations. This showed the PIAL team the curriculum was effective. The focus turned to how PIAL could expand its reach to more schools. The primary classroom PIAL gets invited to is Family and Consumer Science (FCS) classes. New research was conducted related to FCS standards.

Teachers are aware of the FCS standards; these standards had not been linked to the PIAL curriculum. Analysis of the FCS standards and PIAL curriculum found significant correlation with 8 of 16 standards. This research provided evidence of a link between the PIAL curriculum and FCS standards which showcases the relevancy for PIAL in the classroom. The PIAL team will inform FCS teachers of this link, which in turn could become a vehicle of change for more informed youth of tomorrow.
