Designing agricultural business education lessons for existing agriculture courses to build agricultural and financial literacy in high school students

Abstract
While there are a plethora of resources to teach business and personal finances at the secondary level, there is no free comprehensive resource to teach agricultural business topics available to Pennsylvania Agriscience Teachers. According to the 2018 Needs Assessment Survey conducted by the Center for Professional Personnel Development at The Pennsylvania State University, out of all of the AFNR (Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources) Career Pathways, the Agribusiness Systems Career Pathway was indicated as having the most need for Pennsylvania agricultural educators (Curry, 2018; The Council, 2020). This need is also indicated by the fact that Agribusiness accounts for 13% of the NOCTI Pennsylvania Agricultural Productions test (NOCTI, 2017, p. 3).
In order to meet the demand for a free resources to teach agricultural business foundations to high school agriculture students, a 21-day unit plan was designed that could be integrated within another course. Topics covered in the unit include budgeting and personal finances, types of business and agribusiness vocabulary, and how to start a business or write a business plan.
