Abstract

This paper looks into the rise of suicide rates in Iowa compared to those in other states within the Midwest, as well as other regions throughout the United States. This research is very important in developing an idea as to why there is an increase rate in suicide amongst Iowans. By doing so, findings can help aid previous research in guiding individuals in better prevention methods, specifically methods used throughout school districts. Throughout this paper 5 published articles are examined in order to collect data and analyze research findings on the increased rate in suicide throughout the state of Iowa. According to Cathy Beck-Cross, youth suicide is the second leading cause of death amongst Iowans ranging from age 15-24. The purpose of this paper is to unveil factors that have lead to this increased statistic, so that future prevention techniques can be enhanced.
