Abstract
The development of communication networks has reached a point that the switching system rather than the transmission system becomes the bottle-neck for growing volume and varieties of traffic. This thesis was suggested to develop a switch design to solve this problem. The best solution was to convert the switch from synchronous to asynchronous mode of operation. This conversion has led to a study of a new filed which is the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). Both analytical and simulation methods led to the same conclusion about the number of storage locations needed at the output adaptors to keep the probability of cell loss at a certain limit. CCITT recommendations about the ATM mode are still incomplete and many new recommendations are coming up conference after conference. As a result, it is a good idea to dedicate a Ph.D. thesis to implement a new ATM switch that complies with all CCITT recommendations and so that it can be used as a standard design and it can be implemented and used in the real world.
