Abstract
While African Americans had been part of the earliest Lutheran congregations in America (dating from the 1600's), Black Lutheranism as a distinct form of Lutheranism, a Christian tradition that adheres to the teachings of Martin Luther (1483-1546), did not appear until after the Civil War.
