Abstract

For thousands of years, music has been the universal language of all cultures. It can tell stories of the past, communicate emotions and messages, and it has had an impact on almost every person in the world. Most people in the United States hear music in some form every day, and it isn’t a big deal. Or is it? How does participation and involvement in music-related activity impact a child’s development? Research done in the past shows that music benefits listening, social, and cognitive skills in young children, allowing them to grow and learn much easier through adolescence and adulthood. Because of music’s positive influence on development, all children and teenagers should have access to participate and pursue music during their school years. The decision of whether a child wants to participate in the arts should not be based on the Board of Education’s choice to not fund the programs. A student should have the opportunity to immerse him/herself in the arts, and not be restricted from their potential in the field. Through previous research about the correlation of music and development, interviews with those involved in music (whether it be current or past, educators or students, etc.), and quantitative field research that will measure academic, leadership, and social differences between those involved and those uninvolved in music and the arts, I will find credible proof that shows the importance of music not only in shaping a child’s development – but also their future.
