Leopold Letter Winter 2014
TAKING OFF: This issue features two things that are taking off: local food and prairie conservation strips. Once again we evaluated the Regional Food Systems Working Group and found that Iowa’s local food sector is growing, especially at grocery stores and institutions. Meanwhile, Leopold Center-supported STRIPS research moves to another stage – private farms. Director Mark Rasmussen gives us a New Year’s resolution and Distinguished Fellow Fred Kirschenmann returns to his query, “What’s an education for?”
OTHER FEATURES: The returns for growing trees crops, projects that target conservation practices, a long-term look at fertilizer and soil organic matter are among the research articles. You’ll also learn what motivates two conservation leaders and a web exclusive: local meat procurement and school districts.
