Abstract
The study of costume falls under the subject of material culture studies, a comparatively new area of historical study closely tied to social and cultural history. Material culture is a term commonly used in reference to artifacts, any object made or modified by humans. Recently the term has been used to identify "the study through artifacts of the beliefs-values, ideas, attitudes, and assumptions-of a particular community or society at a given time. A better understanding of a society's culture can be obtained by examining its artifacts and the relationship between the physical objects and human behavior. Related behavior that is useful to study includes the making, promotion, distribution, and use of a particular object.
