Uncovering the hidden complexities in the wayfinding user experience: Development of explanatory models

Abstract

<p>Through understanding models of verbal and visual communication and adapting them to relate to wayfinding systems, this study calls into question current applications of "designer directed" wayfinding, and instead encourages a new approach to creating a better user experience for a traveler in their environment. The research understands the importance of cognitive mapping skills as an integral part of a navigator being able to understand the physical environment. New thought is given, focusing on variables that make up the person navigating, the designer of the system and the system itself in order to help show the need for advancement from current wayfinding treads to a more user empowered navigational experience, in which it may be possible for a wayfinding systems to be designed, that adapts to all individuals instead of groups of similar people always adapting to the single system.</p>
