Title: Elegance in Abstract: The conservation of a 2800 lb. modernist tapestry
In this research, we present the possibilities and challenges presented by a large-scale tapestry conservation project (The Curtain Project) that occurred at Iowa State University during the 2013/2014 academic year. We argue that visible, public conservation projects are an opportunity for community building and knowledge-sharing. The Curtain Project was a collaborative effort in which a stage curtain"”an 80-foot by 35-foot, 1.4 ton tapestry woven structure which hangs in Iowa State's Stephens Auditorium was conserved while on view for the public. The conservation treatment served as a backdrop for engagement between the local community and the university and afforded both groups the opportunity learn from one another.
