dc.description.abstract
This research explored biophysical and social aspects related to non-point source pollution in shallow groundwater systems and tributary streams with a specific focus on nutrients. Monitoring data from 12 shallow wells were examined for nutrient levels and flow direction. A survey of riparian homeowners (n=624) was utilized to evaluate knowledge and beliefs regarding groundwater as well as perceived problems and values related to the stream. Results suggest that groundwater flows from an adjacent neighborhood towards a small tributary stream while carrying nutrient loads. Survey results identified a lack of understanding regarding shallow groundwater and pollutant movement into stream water and aquifers. Results also suggest that respondents identified impacts caused by problems more frequently than the causes of the problems. Respondents also appeared to value streams differently based on demographic and proximity factors.
