Abstract
Quality opportunities for high school students are needed to have meaningful experiences in agricultural education curriculum. These meaningful experiences will help produce agriculturally literate people. Many students get to experience lecture based class periods, read books about how things are done, or do something that simulates an activity. When it comes to physically doing what the lecture or book said, it can be a different beast. Agriculture provides a different opportunity than other fields of education when it comes to hands-on and real world application activities. Students need an agriculture education for three main reasons. One, they are surrounded by agriculture throughout their entire life. It can make life go smoother if there is a better understanding of this domain. Secondly, employers in agriculture need employees who understand the field and employees not involved in agriculture should appreciate a working knowledge about agriculture. Finally, producing students who are agriculturally literate will help educate those who are not agriculturally literate. This can help the industry by educating consumers about facts instead of letting fiction sway consumers. This creative component will be mainly centered on experiences involved in the swine industry. An experiential learning opportunity can provide students with reflective thoughts. If students are able to reflect on experiential materials, they can further develop their thoughts to decide if they want to pursue a career in the swine industry. They may find they are really interested or that they do not care at all. At least they will have had the experiences to base those thoughts on.
