Hierarchical distributed network monitor for a heterogeneous network

Abstract

This thesis describes a distributed network management framework by considering a SUN IPX station as the network management station. We shall refer to this station as Sub-Network Management Station (SNMS) Figure 4. There are anumber of agents on the network that report to the management station. The agents may be network objects such as a router. a bridge. a hub, a personal computer on the network, a workstation etc. or a custom-built network monitor. The custom-built network monitor supports through built-in hardware, an in-band link to the management station. It also has built-in, a modem link that is used for out-of-band reporting to the management station. The thesis contains a design of one such media specific hardware which we call the Protocol Probe (PP) for the ethemet 10base2 network media.
