Shifting foundations: A dialectic view

Abstract

Through the use of form and texture, I researched expression of movement and emotion in clay, a malleable medium, fire transformed into stone. This research has resulted in abstract sculpture. Challenged to abandon previous themes and methods, I immersed myself in new concepts and techniques. I started by beating on a twenty-five pound block of wet clay to see what textures would emerge. Whereas before my pieces were carefully constructed, pinching and coiling an inch or two at a time, I became an elemental force. Attacking the clay relentlessly, then carefully caressing, the juxtaposition of conflicting textures united on an energized form. I pushed and pulled and slashed and layered, texture upon texture developed and movement began to take place. The improvisational dance performed while working in clay has further inspired me. My sculptures range from the raw imprint of emotion to minutely choreographed movement. This mapping of movement and emotion through gesture excites me to further exploration. Designing, building, and firing a small kiln fueled with sawdust has proved my hypothesis that sawdust could be used to reach the 2300+ degrees Fahrenheit needed to obtain the results I desire.
