Abstract
The main aim of this thesis is to explore a means for preserving and restoring a famous Renaissance palace, the Palazzo Massimo alle Colonne, designed and built by the well-known architect Baldassare Peruzzi in 1532-1536, by designing a sophisticated retail center for exquisite art objects of Italy on the ground floor of the "palazzo," the palace. This creative adaptation would provide a necessary and continuous source of revenue that could be used for the preservation of the facade and architectural details and for the restoration of the magnificent frescoes in the building. It would offer a much needed way to rejuvenate this eroding neglected structure. Furthermore, with this new commercial function, the ground floor of the building would be opened to the public, so that the resourceful architectural details, unique decorations, loggias, and the courtyard of this outstanding Renaissance piece could be enjoyed and appreciated by many more people for centuries to come.
