Abstract
The electro-oxidation of carbohydrazide in alkaline media was studied on noble metal catalysts for fuel cell applications. It was found that a PtRu black anode and Pt/C cathode lead to the best performance of the catalysts screened, reaching a peak power density of over 850 mW/cm2, which is unprecedented for direct liquid fuel cells. It is hypothezied that this outstanding performance on PtRu black can be attributed to a series reaction pathway, in which carbohydrazide first undergoes hydrolysis to locally generate hydrogen gas, and then the hydrogen gas is electrochemically consumed at the anode to generate electricity.
