| dc.description.abstract | <p>For modern readers, both Jane Austen's Emma (1815) and Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre (1847) often stand as examples of strong, feminist novels. Each novel focuses closely on a young woman making her way in the world and standing up for her personal rights. However, scholars also note the way male suitors exert their control over the novels' protagonists. Because both romantic relationships develop through long conversations and witty bantering, looking deeper into the language reveals the true nature of the relationships at the center of the two novels.</p> | |
