Abstract
This thesis explores the issue of art crimes, and more specifically, the role of the museum in such crimes. To accomplish this, three events which changed art forever: the birth of the Louvre, the theft of La Joconde, and Nazi attitudes towards art, are explored, along with an extended history of art crimes. These theories are then brought to life by modifications to an existing museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and an exhibit which exposes the museum patron to the issues of art crimes and the museum as accomplice.
