Abstract
This research focused on the sustainability of an event measured by physical waste during the COVID-19 pandemic. Motivation for this research study was to uncover how the pandemic is impacting the environmental sustainability of an event, identify steps taken by current event industry professions to provide safe in-person events, then suggest tactics to reduce waste in order to promote sustainability within the events industry. The primary reason behind this research effort was to promote enhanced sustainability in the event management industry and to learn how to appropriately come together as event professional to share ideas and resources on how to plan environmentally sustainable events, while maintaining attendee safety. Recommendations for carrying out safe and sustainable events were informed by qualitative semi-structured interview analyses from Midwest event professionals and presented in toolkit form for widespread event and hospitality management industries use. Implemented recommendations may positively impact the environmental sustainability of Events.
