dc.description.abstract Construction rework is primarily caused by reduced quality of workmanship. The survey indicates that the average cost of construction rework exceed 12% annually. These costs can be significantly reduced through better quality management. Maintaining and improving workmanship quality will provide strong fundamental basis for contractor to perform better work and avoid expensive reworks. This thesis reveals the result of extensive literature review with regard to current industry specifications and tolerance standards that determine the quality of the concrete construction. In addition, data are collected from 5 projects in central Iowa to learn how the specifications actually work in the industry. Data collected are also used to develop the project scoring system. The system is to be used to value the workmanship quality of concrete construction quantitatively. Such system can assist the contractor to control their performance and finally reduce their costs from quality deviation over time.
