Abstract
The intention of this thesis is to propose a digital library as an addition to the Harold Washington Library Center in Chicago. The initial idea was inspired by the impressions on the seemingly "old" gesture of the Harold Washington Library Center and today's fast pace of hi-tech progress. History of the library provides a background of the development of the library as a particular architectural type. The historical references of the Harold Washington Library Center helps me to thoroughly understand and challenge the design concept of the library center so as to create the design strategy of the digital library. Today's information gathering techniques provide the potential to replace the traditional collection of knowledge in libraries, the books, by new digital techniques. This displacement causes the re-conceptualization of the architecture and the role of public library in the city.
