Abstract
People travel the world in search of history, entertainment, adventure, and culture. There are cities which draw more of these tourist than others; Paris, London, New York. Vienna is reclaiming its glory as a world destination alongside of these cities. The city lies in wait for the traveler, but there is the need for a translator, a way in which the tourist can engage with the city in a relatively short period of time. In a response to this need and desire a Centre for the Tourist is required. Within this thesis, a brief outline of the history of the city of Vienna and of tourism is contained. This is a basis for further exploration of how the tourist sees and moves through an unfamiliar place. Of course the city is not an uninvolved participant in this process. The passage of the tourist leaves the city changed. The resulting Centre for the Tourist is comprised of three components. The first and most visible of elements is the Blickturm, the viewing tower. The issue of sight is of importance as tourists survey the city laid before them. The second component, the Fremdenverkehrzentrum, is a source for information on the city and events within it. Both of these are nestled within a display wall that forms a buffer between the tourist and the city until they are ready to enter into it. And so the journey begins. . .
