Abstract

Mitochondria are one of the most conserved organelles in our cells and are able to perform vital cellular functions because of this. A peculiar organism was discovered in 2006 that has the capacity to thrive inside mitochondria. This organism, given the name Candidatus Midichloria mitochondrii was discovered to colonize the oocytes of the tick species Ixodes ricinus. Three advantages to living in mitochondria have been proposed: avoidance of the host's immune system, usage of the host’s metabolites, and security into the next generation. The name of this organism has ties to the popular fantasy universe Star Wars due to its similarities with the endosymbiotic organisms midichlorians. Since this organism has been recently discovered, further research can be done that can improve our knowledge of mitochondrial biology.
