Abstract

This paper specifically seeks to determine the degree to which the population of non-Hispanic whites is declining in Iowa communities that have experienced substantial Hispanic growth compared to similar communities that have not had notable Hispanic growth between 1990 and 2000. Subsequently, it considers common community characteristics and social and economic trends that have been addressed in similar research in both urban and rural places, identifying the overall community impacts, if any, of Hispanic settlement and non-Hispanic flight. Per capita income, levels of education, growth in specific occupational sectors, and overall population growth are compared in places that have experienced significant Hispanic growth to those that have not.
