Abstract
This thesis begins with an explanation of the player, the piano, and the school. Following this discussion, there is an explanation of two places that largely influenced the design of the music school. The first is Lawrence Avenue and Roosevelt Public High School located a few blocks from the site. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the actual elements of the school that are practice spaces, performing spaces, and spaces for student gatherings. A major component of the music school is the piano. It is the architecture of the spaces housing both performance and practice pianos that I have been interested in. The pianos are part of a proposed music school. The rituals and practices of the players have been an influence on the architecture of the piano spaces. These players are the students of the school. Both the players and the pianos are part of a proposed music school for Chicago. The idea of the school as an institution has been explored and redefined in a way that this music school remains as a place of education, but can no longer be thought of in terms of the traditional institution. My thesis began with the investigation of the question, "what is the piano in the city?" This question was addressed through the investigation of many different relationships and concepts. For example, I studied the relationship between public and private. This relationship was particularly important to the project in understanding the conditions of practicing in private verses performing in public.
