The first national meeting of textile and clothing professors took place in Madison, Wisconsin in June 1959. With a mission to advance excellence in education, scholarship and innovation, and their global applications, the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) is a professional and educational association of scholars, educators, and students in the textile, apparel, and merchandising disciplines in higher education.

Abstract

The need for high quality education and research that trains students to acquire needed professional competencies are of critical importance in the apparel and textile (A&T) academic programs. The ITAA offers a set of educational goals (meta-goals) to guide curriculum development and assessment of student preparation in U.S. universities. This quantitative study applied the ITAA meta-goals to examine the perceptions of graduates of a A&T undergraduate program on their preparation after graduation. Results showed that graduates felt most prepared to fulfill the meta-goals of Professional Development, Ethics, Social Responsibility, and Sustainability, and Critical and Creative Thinking. In addition, graduates placed highest importance on these three meta-goals. The results from this study could have a significant impact on future curriculum development and assessment. Using the existing ITAA meta-goals is an effective way to assess perceived student preparation, but further examination of the use of meta-goals is suggested.
