Abstract
What Whispers in the Woods is a fantasy novel set in a realm that is surrounded by an invisible barrier. Residents of the realm name the space beyond the mysterious threshold the beyond. They do not know the history of the barrier, but they have grown accustomed to the fact that when anyone crosses into the beyond, they disappear. No one has ever returned after entering the beyond, which has led to questions about whether the forest, Hush Wood, that is seen within the beyond is real or a mirage. This thesis explores the topics of climate discourse, grief, and identity. It follows the journey of Lola Nandez, an author who, after her own brother disappears into the beyond, writes a controversial book of fables which suggests that the beyond might be a benign place, not something to fear. Her perspective is considered taboo by most people in her realm. As she travels home, after a ten-year absence, to see her dying mother, she interacts with a series of guides who tell stories and myths about the mysteries and dangers of the beyond.
