Abstract

Two insects are discussed as pests of beans in Southern Idaho. One of the species, Lygus hesperus Knight, is reported for the first time as a pest of beans. The injury caused is termed "punctured beans";The life history of the two species is discussed. The description of the five nymphal instars and the adult stage is given. The life history of the two species was found to be essentially the same; The injury of these two insects is fully described and photographs of the injury are presented. Methods used for determining the cause of the injury are discussed in detail;Populations of the two insects in alfalfa, clover, and beans are studied and the methods used are described;A brief resume of the history of the two pests is presented; Two parasites, one unidentified, are discussed. The parasites were not present during the entire season; Methods of control are discussed, but no definite recommendations are made; The systematic position of the two insects is stated and a proposal is made to raise them from the rank of varieties to that of species for reasons given;New common names are proposed for each species.
