Farm income prospects for Iowa farmers in 1965 look somewhat better than in 1964. Livestock returns are expected to increase, though crop income may decline slightly. Total cash receipts are likely to be moderately higher. With production costs expected to rise only slightly, net returns should show some gain over 1964.
Lower soil moisture reserves this tall reduce Iowa farmers' chances for high corn and soybean yields this year. The 1965 crop will be particularly dependent on crop season rainfall.
Western corn rootworm, black cutworm, corn borer are among crop insects to watch. Mosquito-borne encephalitis has been increasing and warrants protective measures for both humans and livestock.
Supply of all forage crops seeds generally used in Iowa equals or betters last year's use. More certified soybean seed to be available.
An old year ending; a new year beginning. Time for a family to stop and take a critical look at last year and plan for the next.
