Abstract
There is a confluence of four major trends that result in the need to optimize how older Americans adopt voice-enabled communication technologies. The first trend is the growth of this technology globally. Digital voice assistants' usage is expected to grow to 8.4 billion in 2024 from 3.25 billion in 2019 Dwivedi and Hughes (2021). The second trend comes from early research that indicates that voice-enabled technologies effectively improve seniors' mental and physical health. Voice-based conversational agents (VCAs) have been shown to provide high user satisfaction in delivering interventions to influence healthy lifestyles Bérubé, Caterina (2021). The third trend is the growth rate of seniors compared to the overall population. The size of the population 65 and over is projected to double by 2050 Jumabhoy, Sara, Jung, and Yu (2022). The final trend is the shrinking number of care providers within the United States. The number of states receiving a grade of "D" or "F" for their physician shortage ratio will increase from 4 in 2017 to 23 by 2030 Lin and Lin (2020).
Each of these trends individually constitutes a momentous shift within our society. When you consider them collectively, the need to leverage highly usable technology to provide engagement and care to seniors will become ever more critical in the next few years.
