Cultural storytelling: Korea

Abstract

This thesis describes the research and implementation of the project, Cultural Storytelling about Korea, which was exhibited at Art Gallery 181, Iowa State University, from April 6 to April 15, 2022. The artist's discourse on culture is suggested through three projects: two concept art projects focusing on material culture and mental culture, and a graphic novel entitled Tal. This document discusses effective methods to convey Korean culture with visual art to an audience from various backgrounds. Sources of information include the analysis of culture, Korean history, Korean oral literature, and various inspirations. This project attempts to answer the question: What is the value of the artist's cultural storytelling in this modern society? Exhibited works encourage the audience to place themselves in a world with mysterious creatures most likely beyond anything they had imagined. They reflect the artist’s idea of culture and the significance of storytelling.
