Abstract

In 1925, the State of California had a population of slightly more than 4,000,000 people. The fresh winds blew through the Golden Gate and rippled the waters of San Francisco bay, unspanned by bridges, The El Peublo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Angeles-which had been cruelly abbreviated to Los Angeles, lay under a warm bring sun retaining much of its Spanish charm. the Sierra, the Siskiyous, the Cascades and the Coast Range were crowned with forests-a paradise for a young forester, fresh from the tutelage of such great men as G.B. MacDonald, Dwignt Jeffers, Horace Andrews and Skipper Larsen. In retrospect it was a quiet time and the chief concerns were focused on the custodianship of the forests.
